A SENIOR North Wales police officer last night confirmed there were two traffic crashes on the deadly A547 in the hours leading up to Britain's worst cycling tragedy. Chief Superintendent Geraint Anwyl revealed the crash which on Sunday claimed the lives of four cyclists near Abergele was the third that morning. In an email sent to Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane yesterday Ch Supt Anwyl confirmed there was a "non-injury collision" on the road at 5.26am. In an earlier email sent to the MP on Monday, the officer confirmed there was a second crash at 9am. At 10.10am a Toyota Corolla skidded into 12 cyclists, killing four and injuring eight. Rhyl Cycling Club chairman Maurice Broadbent, 61, rising star Thomas Harland, 14, dad-of-three Dave Horrocks, 55, and 42-year-old electronics engineer Wayne Wilkes all died. Mr Ruane last night criticised the force for not confirming the first crash earlier. |
