AN emergency shutdown of Wylfa's nuclear reactors last week alarmed a nearby resident who saw a "massive cloud of orange smoke" billowing from the plant. Both of Wylfa's reactors were forced to shut down after an electrical fault affected power supplies to monitoring instruments at the power-station. People passing the Cemaes Bay plant on Tuesday at about 6.30pm described a huge cloud of what appeared to be smoke coming from the area of the outlet pipe. Ceri Mair Hughes said she was genuinely scared of what she saw while out walking her dog. She said: "It was amazing, like something from the X-Files. "It was just huge, what looked like smoke and an orange glow, like there was fire. "I didn't know what it was, and that was frightening. I stood there for about 10 minutes rooted to the spot before running home to tell everyone. "You just don't know what could happen and it struck the fear of God in me." A Wylfa spokesperson said: "An investigation on Tuesday evening located a fault on an electrical instrument so the decision was taken to shut the reactors down in a controlled manner. "This resulted in a lot of steam being let out, which makes a lot of noise and the orange glow was probably just reflected from lights on the site. "This was in no way radioactive, and was not dangerous. "The reactors were restarted last weekend but, in accordance with safety procedures, it takes a while to run up to full power." |
