Rabbits left to rot in cages

Jan 19 2006

Daily Post

A FORMER pet shop owner was yesterday sentenced to 150 hours of community work after he left rabbits to rot in their cages.

Robert Orr was also banned from having a pet shop for 10 years and ordered to pay £500 costs.

Magistrates at Llandudno were told the rabbits were found last April by RSPCA inspectors at the 32-year-old's shop Rob's Pets in Colwyn Bay's main street.

The prosecution said the animals would have suffered for up to three weeks.

The kitchen porter, of Groes Road, Colwyn Bay, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the animals.

Graham Parry, defending, said it was Orr's first business and he did not cope well with financial pressures.

Court chairman Philip Evans said Orr was "clearly negligent".

He added: "This is a classic example of how people who are ill-prepared and inexperienced can get into very serious difficulties by embarking on enterprises."
