Ex-'clippie' will help mark anniversary of tramway's closure

Jan 25 2006

Daily Post

A 98-YEAR-old former tram conductress will join events to mark the end of the Llandudno to Colwyn Bay tramway.

Gladys Dyster of Abergele, worked on the route during World War II.

She will be among retired staff at a 50th anniversary dinner at the Aberhod Restaurant in Rhos-on-Sea on Saturday, March 25.

It is hoped she and other fellow guests, including retired driver Jim Trueman of Llysfaen, and ex-conductor John Evans of Colwyn Bay, can also be taken by car along the old route they once worked on.

Trams ran between the resorts from 1907 to March 24, 1956.

Widow Mrs Dyster came from Essex where she met husband William.

He worked in the Board of Education which transferred to Colwyn Bay in the war.

She got a job as a "clippie" on the route between Greenfield Road in Colwyn Bay and West Shore, Llandudno.

She said: "It was very busy on the trams. You would get crushed if you didn't shout out 'I'm here!'"

Later, Mrs Dyster worked as a machinist making curtains in Llandudno.

Mrs Dyster's husband died when he was 63. They had no children, but she does have a niece in Wrexham.

The 50th anniversary events were organised by Llandudno and Colwyn Bay Tramway Society.

Author Geoff Price will be a guest speaker at the anniversary dinner.

He sold his 15,000-strong collection of tramway photographs and other memorabilia to the society.

Meanwhile, society spokesman Bob Barnsdale says it is employing a coach builder and engineer to restore a "Bournemouth car" tram..
