A PARKING perk for pensioners is about to be axed after get-tough highways bosses uncovered a scam. Almost 1,000 Anglesey pensioners enjoy a knock-down deal, paying just £15 a year to use any of the island's council-run car parks. But an investigation into the parking voucher scheme appears to have highlighted a fiddle. Council chiefs claim some elderly drivers are "lending" their vouchers to younger family members and friends. Now the county council's head of highways and transportation Dewi Williams is calling for a major policy change. He wants to scrap the discount scheme, forcing pensioners to pay the full whack. And he wants to raise the cost of ordinary parking vouchers from £100 to £120. Last night an angry Anglesey pensioner branded the move "disgraceful". Jane Edmonds, from Gaerwen, claimed the £15 scheme was already "too expensive". The 80-year-old said: "Its already too expensive. At first the voucher cost just £5 then it went up to £10 and now it's £15. "Doing away with it and asking us to pay £120 is disgraceful. "I won't be buying it if it goes up to that amount." |
