COUNCILLORS on Anglesey were last night under pressure to back calls for a new nuclear power station on the island. Seven members on the island's 40-strong county council tabled a notice of motion reviving demands for a Wylfa B to be built on the site of the existing power station near Cemaes. Backers include local authority leader William J Williams and his deputy Gareth Winston Roberts, both members of the ruling Anglesey Forward group. The "back-us" plea goes before a full meeting of the council next month. It was sparked by fears the scheduled shutdown of Wylfa in four years time could lead to the closure of Anglesey Aluminium, on the outskirts of Holyhead. The double whammy would result in 1,600 job losses and a devastating £42m body blow to the island's fragile economy. The notice of motion was also signed by members of three other groups, Goronwy Parry (Partners for Progress), Brian Owen and Phil Fowlie (Original Independents) along with Hefin Thomas and John Arthur Jones (the Radical Independents). As well as demanding backing for a new power plant they are looking for an extension to Wylfa's current lifespan. |
