PLANS to kill off a parking perk for pensioners were dramatically shelved last night after highways bosses were bombarded with complaints. Up to 1,000 Anglesey pensioners benefit from a knock down deal under which they pay £15 a year to use any of the island's council-run car parks. But council chiefs said the system was being abused by some elderly drivers "lending" their vouchers to younger family members and friends. Yesterday, the county council's executive, meeting in Llangefni, decided to withdraw a report prepared by head of highways and transportation, Dewi Williams. He wanted the £15 voucher scheme to be axed. Highways portfolio holder, Keith Evans, of Menai Bridge, said the executive received a number of complaints from other councillors and members of the public after reports that the parking deal was being abused. |
