Corus face charges after blast deaths

Feb 16 2006

Daily Post

STEEL giant Corus was last night facing criminal prosecution more than four years after a devastating blast killed three steelmen at a UK plant.

Len Radford, 53, Andrew Hutin, 20, and Stephen Galsworthy, 25, died when blast furnace number 5 exploded at the firm's Port Talbot plant.

A dozen other workers were seriously burned when molten metal rained down on them as the furnace erupted in November 2001.

Now an exhaustive Health and Safety Executive inquiry concluded the company must face criminal prosecution.

HSE inspectors last night said Corus is to face two separate charges for breaches of health and safety law.

Corus UK Ltd was served with two summonses setting out exactly what the charges against it is.

The first hearing of the case is scheduled for April 12 at Neath Magistrates' Court.

The HSE alleges Corus UK Ltd did not ensure, so far as was reasonably practicable, the safety of its employees, including Mr Galsworthy, Mr Hutin and Mr Radford, in connection with the operation of Blast Furnace Number 5.
