This illness can be worse than cancer

Mar 6 2006

By Eryl Crump, Daily Post

A WOMAN plagued with a string of debilitating allergies was last night hoping a move to North Wales may improve her quality of life.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity sufferer Louise Solomons was diagnosed with the illness when she was 38.

Now 54 she says MCS - an extreme reaction to everyday chemicals such as perfume, furniture polish and bathroom cleaner - has ruined her life.

Increasingly poor health inspired Ms Solomons to leave her native London last December for the Welsh countryside where "the air is cleaner".

For a few weeks she lived near Builth Wells, in Powys, with just sheep for company.

But she has now moved to the Pwllheli area and is searching for caring and environmentally-aware householders who could help find a safe place to live.

She said: "I'm willing to pay rent for a room in a house somewhere in North or mid Wales - ideally a house which has not been refurbished in recent years.

"It would also need to be remote from any main roads."

Ms Solomons' condition became so bad she was forced to give up work.

Her symptoms include headaches, sore eyes, mouth and throat, itching and burning skin, sweating and muscle and joint pain, a bad chest, back pain and tiredness and weakness.

The MCS sufferer said from early childhood she had a strong sense of smell and was intoxicated by everyday experiences.

She was a top student, was employed as a secretary and did voluntary work with children and blind people.

Ms Solomons said: "I kept going and was coping with my condition although it was restricting.

"I can just about tolerate cotton against my skin. A normal life with family and friends has been impossible.

"I want people to be aware of MCS because support and compassion are often lacking when most needed."

She added: "MCS has ruined my life. I have aged 20 years and lost a head of hair. This illness can be worse then cancer as there is no relief and no safe place."

For the past three years Ms Solomons said she has suffered adverse reactions to electricity too.

This is a condition known as electrical sensitivity (ES) which could be the result of exposure to electromagnetic fields associated with electrical equipment.
