PLAID last night branded Anglesey council's decision to back plans for a new nuclear power station "premature". The party said it supported calls for Wylfa's life to be extended beyond its 2010 shutdown date to protect the island's fragile economy. But it accused the local authority of "forcing the issue" on proposals for a second station without having the necessary scientific or technical information to hand. Anglesey council last week backed in principle proposals for a new station on the Wylfa site, near Cemaes, if the UK government decided to plough ahead with a new nuclear programme. Yesterday, Plaid said it was "premature" for the council to express a view prior to the publication of the UK government's review on the future of nuclear energy, which is expected in June or July. In a joint statement Plaid Ynys Môn AM Ieuan Wyn Jones and Councillor Fflur Mai Hughes said: "We were also surprised that the council had not prepared any background papers that would have allowed the councillors to come to a rational decision on the matter. "That is why we proposed an amendment that would have allowed the council to make a rational decision when all the information was in hand. |
