Groom dies day after wedding

Mar 8 2006

By Antony Stone, Daily Post

A YOUNG bride became a wife and a widow in the space of 24 hours.

Jayne Healey's dream wedding turned into a nightmare when she woke up in a hotel bed to find husband Paul beside her, dead.

The couple, of Cwmavon, Port Talbot, held a lavish wedding reception at the Aberavon Beach Hotel after marrying there on Saturday.

Family and friends of Mrs Healey, 26, rallied round yesterday as she struggled to come to terms with her shock.

Police were called to the hotel on Sunday morning, shortly after the discovery of 31-year-old Paul Healey.

They confirmed the death was being treated as non-suspicious and was reported to the coroner.

Paul Haines, 50, a next-door neighbour and family friend, said the death shocked everyone. "I spent the night at the hotel after the reception, which was a great success, and went home with my wife Rosemary in the morning," he said..

"Paul didn't enjoy the best of health but he seemed quite well at the reception and the disco later in the evening."

Mrs Healey said: "It was the perfect wedding. He was so happy. He just did not want the day to end.

"It was the happiest day of my life and it became the worst.

"I knew when I woke up, he had gone. I feel like a part of me is gone.

"My only comfort is that he was surrounded by all the people who loved him on the day before he died."
