Lib-Dems to get tough on nuclear move

Mar 10 2006

By Tom Bodden, Daily Post

WELSH Liberal Democrats will be urged tomorrow to toughen up their stand against any new nuclear powers in Wales.

The party's spring conference in Wrexham will be told cash that could be spent on nuclear power should be diverted into renewable energy technologies.

The Young Lib Dem wing tabled the call for the party's MPs and AMs to oppose any government move towards more nuclear power.

Planning powers on all energy developments should also be devolved to the Welsh Assembly, the group says.

Dom Hannigan, campaigns officer for MIDR Cymru said it was laying down a challenge to the wider party.

"It is clear Tony Blair is keen on opening more unpopular nuclear power stations to help meet energy requirements - this is simply unacceptable and we in Wales need the power to block him," he said..

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates, the party's environment spokesperson, said: "Young people should be making the radical proposals that confront the complacency that has crept in to the energy debate.

"The future is not a gift, it is a reward for what we do now."

Anglesey County Council gave its backing in principle to the building of a new nuclear power station at Wylfa, near Cemaes, on the island.

The existing power station at Wylfa is due to close in 2010, although some campaigners want an extension to allow time for an alternative power supply for the nearby Anglesey Aluminium plant.

More than 1,100 jobs are at stake with the closure of the power station and the threatened closure of the aluminium plant if its future energy supply can not be secured.

. New leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Menzies Campbell is expected to address the conference rally in Wrexham tonight.

The conference will debate policies which could form the basis of the party's manifesto for the 2007 Assembly elections.

Other issues on the agenda include dentistry, new rights for Welsh speakers and the proposed merger of police forces.
