A FURIOUS row broke out yesterday in Parliament over the safety of the Wylfa nuclear power station. The war of words took place during an evidence session of the powerful Welsh Affairs select committee in Westminster. Anti-nuclear campaigners clashed with pro-nuclear Labour MP Albert Owen over the North Wales' power station's record. Campaigners claimed the plant has a poor safety record and questioned the quality of information supplied to the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) about the Anglesey plant. But Mr Owen insisted the site was safe and accused them of peddling "out-dated hearsay". Hugh Richards, of the Welsh Anti Nuclear Alliance, questioned the annual inspection regime of the plant's graphite cores, when samples are taken of the graphite by the plant's operator and handed to the NII for inspection. But Mr Richards told MPs that this fails to give the full picture of how the cores are deteriorating. |
