A FARMER who spent 20 years working in the shadow of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster has developed cancer. Dad-of-three Huw Roberts farms at Llanuwchllyn,15 miles from the defunct Trawsfynnydd nuclear reactor. His farm was in the original "dirty zone", an area of farmland contaminated by deadly caesium 137 when Chernobyl's radioactive cloud rained down on North Wales. Huw is due to have an operation tomorrow to remove a tumour from his intestines. But before being admitted to hospital he told ITV Wales' Wales This Week how the news "knocked me back a bit". He praised his neighbours for rallying round and said his local choir - Côr Godre'r Aran - supported him "like one big family". |
