RAF 'spy in sky' tested

Mar 30 2006

Daily Post

THE RAF's first "spy in the sky" jet completed in North Wales has flown to the USA for flight trials.

The Sentinel RI aircraft, based on a Bombardier Global Express business jet, is part of the RAF's £800m Astor (airborne standoff radar) project, due to feed back up-to-the-minute detailed pictures from behind enemy lines.

Broughton-based Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL) are responsible for adapting the aircraft that will be used in the programme.

The aircraft left Broughton for Greenville in Texas, where formal flight testing will be carried out. The aircraft will then return to the UK in late spring for further trials.
