TWO dozen bingo players escaped unscathed when a series of explosions ripped through a North Wales social club. They were settling in for their weekly session at Llangefni Football Club when a blaze broke out in an electrical cupboard. As they made their way to safety through the emergency exit, flames were spotted spreading from a back room just behind the bar. Last night, directors of the Anglesey club were left counting the cost of Sunday night's inferno which razed the former mobile classroom to the ground. Trophies and soccer memorabilia were lost in the blaze and tables and chairs left buckled and twisted by the intense heat. But swift action by 20 firefighters from Llangefni, Menai Bridge, Bangor and Benllech saved the nearby changing rooms as well as a generator holding 3,500 litres of diesel and 2,000 litres of heating oil. Yesterday morning, club officials, including manager Bryan Owen and chairman Gwynfor Parry, pledged the social club would be rebuilt. It is worth up to £20,000 a year to the ambitious Cymru Alliance side which hopes to achieve Welsh Premier League status. Mr Parry, from Rhoscefnhir, said it was a "sad day" for the club. |
