A TEAM of rowers from North Wales is to attempt to row across the Irish Sea in a Celtic longboat. On the first weekend in May, members of Pwllheli Rowing Club will set sail from Porth Oer, near Aberdaron, to Wicklow Head, south of Dublin. The team of three men and two women are aiming to establish a time for the crossing so that other teams can mount a challenge in the future. Eifion Owen, who has already achieved a rare double by sailing and windsurfing across the same route, said: "We've decided to name it the 6°G Challenge as the clock will stop once we cross the 6° meridian west (west is gorllewin in Welsh) line that runs right through the end of Wicklow Head. "We've been hard at training for a few weeks to improve our fitness. The crossing will only be attempted if a suitable window of weather is forecasted on the first weekend in May. If not, we plan to re-schedule for the following weekend." The crew will be rowing a 24-foot Celtic longboat designed and manufactured in Pembrokeshire. Four will be rowing at any given time, with one coxing. |
