A WINDFARM off North Wales will not be completed for another two years, while another scheme to build more than 200 wind turbines at nearby Gwynt y Môr could be shelved, according to reports Anti-wind farm protesters last night questioned the viability of both schemes and demanded they be axed. Save Our Scenery (SOS) spokesman John Lawson-Reay said: "We are being cautious because the consultation period has just ended and the government will take at least 12 months to consider its decision. "But there is no way wind farms will provide power for the future. It would require 60 wind farms the size of Gwynt y Môr to replace one nuclear power station and that may be what is behind the government's latest review of energy supplies." Developers nPower said the Rhyl Flats scheme involving 30 turbines will be completed by 2008 if construction work starts later this year. When completed, the first round of 13 offshore wind farms should generate 1,500MW of electricity, enough for a city one-and-a-half times the size of Birmingham. |
