TWO North Wales wind power experts last night cast doubt on the efficiency of the planned 200-turbine Gwynt y Môr windfarm off Llandudno. Former Cambridge University engineering professor Sion Williams, now of Eglwysbach, and Dr Peter Holliman, of Conwy, who works in Bangor university chemistry department, said the proposal was "ambitious" and "high risk". Dr Holliman believes the claim by developer Npower Renewables that turbines will operate at maximum capacity is flawed. It is closer to just 27%, he says. He said Npower Renewables' website shows its other windfarms have 40 or fewer turbines. Gwynt y Mor's 200-plus turbine scheme could also blight the countryside and threaten tourism. Dr Holliman said: "Wind power has serious drawbacks in terms of its ability to deliver energy and its significant visual impact." |
