Owner's ask £800,000 for historic building torched by arsonists

May 22 2006

Daily Post

A HISTORIC mansion destroyed by arsonists has been put up for sale.

Grade 1 listed Hafodunos Hall at Llangernyw, near Abergele, is on the market with an asking price of £800,000.

In addition to the hall itself, which was gutted in a spectacular blaze in October 2005, the price includes a keeper's cottage, entrance lodge, four acres of walled gardens, which are also listed as being of exceptional importance, and 45 acres of land.

Two young men were jailed for setting fire to the Victorian mansion and causing an estimated £8m worth of damage.

Hafodunos was designed by architect Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 1860s, having been commissioned by the Sandbach family. Sir Gilbert's other works include the Albert Memorial and St Pancras Hotel in London.

It is owned by Colwyn Bay development firm SFJ Ltd.

The building, regarded as one of the finest in North Wales, was not insured as the risk was considered too great and SFJ's managing director said he repeatedly warned Conwy Council about the possibility of fire.

The property is being sold by St David's Commercial, of Colwyn Bay, who say it should be of interest to property investors, speculators and owneroccupiers
