FARMERS were last night warned they may get a surprise visit from an African bird of prey soaring over the mid Wales skies. African white-backed vulture George can be seen flying high above hills and towns in the Dyfi valley over the coming weeks. But owners Barry and Luce Macdonald, of the Machynlleth-based Dyfi Valley Raptor Experience, said the massive bird presents no threat to local wildlife. They said the bird of prey is in training and quite harmless. Barry said: "With a nine-foot wingspan George is perhaps one of the most well-known African white-backed vultures in Wales. "He is familiar from television programmes and major shows and events. In flight, vultures like George look majestic, flying high on the thermals as high as 5,000ft. "We do not expect George to range further in flight than the Dyfi valley and he will return home back to his aviary for feeding time with the other vultures we house. "We will be monitoring his whereabouts by using a transmitter and tracking device so if he lands we can detect this. |
