'Boycott this circus over elephant act'

Jul 4 2006

By Eryl Crump, Daily Post

ANIMAL rights activists last night demanded a boycott of a mid Wales circus starring an elephant.

Bobby Roberts Circus will be performing at Llanbadarn Fawr near Aberystwyth from tomorrow until Sunday. The circus, the only one touring the UK with an elephant, is one of just eight circuses still to use animals.

The Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS) yesterday called for the boycott claiming it receives more complaints about Bobby Roberts Circus than any other in the UK

CAPS spokesman Paul Thomas said in addition to using horses, ponies and dogs in its acts, the circus also features an elephant, Anne.

She appears for just a few minutes in the interval so visitors can have their photo taken with her. Westminster is presently debating a bill which would see a ban on wild species in travelling shows.

Mr Thomas said: "Elephants are very social and intelligent animals who can suffer from a range of physical and mental problems in captivity. The world's leading elephant experts condemn the use of elephants in circuses."
