STAFF at Iceland's Deeside distribution centre, who went on strike following plans to close the depot and relocate it to Warrington, have put further plans on hold. The move to suspend a second strike, which was planned from midnight today, follows further talks with company bosses on redundancy terms. Last Friday, July 14, saw more than 300 drivers and warehouse staff take to the picket line calling for a better redundancy package. Iceland announced the closure and relocation last week following a 90-day consultation period. It said the Deeside depot, due to close on September 29, is less efficient than others and they needed to reduce expenditure by £2m. During last Friday's strike, lorries entering the Deeside depot were asked to turn around - but strikers stressed it was not a blockade. And one employee's car carried a message to Iceland chief executive Malcolm Walker saying '100s of jobs taken away. Shame on you Malcolm and your 'Baldwin' tactics'. |
