A NORTH Wales youngster died yesterday as he played in the sea off a busy holiday beach. Rescuers desperately tried to revive the six-year-old after he was pulled from the waves. The Wrexham youngster was thought to be enjoying a day at Barmouth with his family, as the school summer break began. Off-duty nurses relaxing on the beach rushed to help when the unconscious boy was brought ashore. They gave him mouth-to-mouth and heart massage before paramedics arrived. The Wales Air Ambulance flew him to Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, where medics continued the battle to save his life. But the youngster was later pronounced dead. North Wales Police said news of the "tragic accident" was being broken to other relatives late last night. A spokeswoman said: "The young boy was pulled from the water and airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor where he was later pronounced dead. "Police inquiries are continuing to this incident but at this stage there is nothing to suggest this is anything more than a tragic accident." Barmouth's harbourmaster and beach wardens assisted in the rescue attempts and cleared the beach to allow emergency vehicles access. The north west Wales coroner was informed and a postmortem will be carried out later today to determine the cause of death. |
