Light up and you're sacked

Jul 25 2006

Daily Post

WORKERS who light up at a new £14m North Wales hotel were yesterday handed an ultimatum by their boss - your fags or your job.

Hard hitting general manager of Deganwy's The Quay Hotel and Spa Tony Riley told all new and existing staff a cigarette ban will be strictly imposed at the new no-smoking hotel.

He has even drawn up battle lines in his fight against the fags, telling staff they must stub out before crossing the railway line signals at the start of the Deganwy Quay development.

Lifelong non smoker Tony said: "Everyone has the right to make a choice about whether they smoke or not but I would like to encourage them to take the healthy option while at work.

"Therefore, they can't bring cigarettes, cigars or pipes onto the hotel premises and instead of taking smoking breaks during the day they will be encouraged to step outside and fill their lungs with fresh North Wales sea air instead."

The ban affects several existing staff, including members of the management team and new recruits.

Head chef Stephen Duffy said: "This is probably the push I needed to give up smoking.

I've wanted to quit for a long time but this gives me the motivation. I know it's going to be hard but I've stocked up on patches and if there's a few of us giving up we will encourage each other."

All inside areas of The Quay Hotel will be smoke-free when it opens for business in a few weeks' time.

However, there will be a couple of designated areas outside where guests can smoke if they wish.
