Bunnies with no ears need cash for carrots

Aug 7 2006

By Carl Butler, Daily Post

AN ANIMAL-lover last night appealed for a sponsor to help her care for two bunnies who have no ears.

Volunteer Toyah Marshall believes scissors or a sharp blade were used to lop off the rabbits' lobes.

Sisters Phoebe and Monica, named after the characters in hit sitcom Friends, are now being cared for at a Mold animal shelter.

The pair also have dental problems and rescue staff believe they will struggle to find the pets a good home.

So workers at Bowden Bunny Rescue hope to find a sponsor to keep the pair in carrots and help care care for them.

Toyah, 24, was suspicious after seeing the rabbits advertised for free on a website.

She arrived at a "perfectly respectable looking home" but was horrified to find the rabbits had no ears.

She said: "Whenever we see rabbits advertised for free it rings alarm bells.

"Snake breeders have been known to use them as food for their pets - they're easier to swallow without ears.

"Some people snip them to make the rabbits appear 'cute' or unusual.

"I don't think they often mean to be cruel - they just don't know how to care for animals."

Katie Bowden, who works as a receptionist as well as running

the self-funded sanctuary from her home, said: "Originally, the owner told us the rabbits were the victims of a cruel teenage prank.

"Then she said the mother of the rabbits had done it.

"But the vet has assured us the injuries to these ears had to have been made with scissors or a sharp blade because of the precise nature of the cut."

The sanctuary has asked the RSPCA to investigate what may have caused the injuries.

Katie added: "People don't seem to want rabbits with any kind of deformity and both have tooth problems which means caring for them is expensive."
