WELSH activists took their campaign for a new language act to the Labour party at the Eisteddfod Maes yesterday. More than 100 members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith marched across the Maes to the Labour stand. They chanted while members stuck stickers demanding a new language act. Cymdeithas yr Iaith spokeswoman Sian Howys said: "In the past year we have seen aconsensus of opinion among political parties and organisations, such as Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, and individuals such as Lord Gwilym Prys-Davies, a leading member of the Labour party. "But one organisation refuses to take part in any meaningful discussions in this important debate. "Time after time, Rhodri Morgan, Alun Pugh and other members of the Labour government refuse to discuss it and for that reason Cymdeithas yr Iaith will continue to campaign until we get a new Welsh language act." Police were called but there were no arrests and the protest ended after about 20 minutes. Labour party officials were left to clean up the stand and remove the stickers. Conwy MP Betty Williams and environment minister Carwyn Jones were at the stand when the protest began but they quickly left. |
