AROUND 150 ex-workers of a North Wales car parts factory have taken a step nearer claiming compensation for illnesses after working with asbestos. Some of the ex-workers or their relatives could get compensation of between £50-£100,000 if they can prove the illness was linked to working at the former brake company. From 1962 until 1997, asbestos was used in the production of brake and clutch linings by a workforce of nearly a 1,000 at Ferodo, on the Menai Strait, near Caernarfon. In the late 80s, dozens of Ferodo workers were diagnosed as suffering from asbestosis and they received "provisional" awards allowing further claims if their condition was to deteriorate. A meeting at Caernarfon Football Club on Saturday was held after T&N and 48 other firms, part of the Federal-Mogul UK Group of companies, went into administration. Walker Smith and Way solicitor Mike Keenan said T&N, like many other asbestos-related companies, had not been insured to pay for asbestos claims and were refusing to pay. It's estimated claims in the UK alone are around £337m. |
