Rescued otter cub sets off on long road back to the wild

Aug 30 2006

Daily Post

A BABY otter was recovering in an animal hospital yesterday after it was found in a garden.

The female otter cub was handed in last week by two women who found it in their garden near Botwnnog, on Lly^n.

The cub, thought to be no more than about five months old, was handed to Sarah Jones, who runs an otter rescue centre near Dolgellau.

She nursed and fed the youngster for three days before it was taken to the RSPCA's Stapeley Grange wildlife centre in Nantwich, Cheshire.

It is building up strength ready to be taken to an otter sanctuary in the New Forest, before being released back into the wild when it is older.

Sarah said: "She was a bit weak when she first came to me, and probably frightened and missing her mother, but I fed her for three days and she was absolutely fine when she set off for Nantwich."

Andrew Kelly, manager of the Stapeley Grange centre, said: "She's doing fine, she's eating well.

"We'll hang on to her for a couple of weeks before she goes to the Owl and Otter Trust in the New Forest, who will carry on her rehabilitation until she's ready to be released back into the wild."

Otters are a semi-aquatic endangered species living in rivers and lakes, and are protected by law.
