Honeymooner added to murder accused

13:05, Feb 10 2012

Shrien Dewani is to be added as the fourth accused in the case over the honeymoon murder of his bride Anni, a court has been told.

Senior state advocate Shareen Riley told the Western Cape High Court in South Africa that Dewani is scheduled to join two other accused in the dock when the trial eventually gets under way.

Dewani, while on honeymoon with his wife in December 2010, allegedly hired three men to kill her in a staged hijacking in Cape Town's Gugulethu township.

Co-accused Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni have appeared briefly in the High Court at a pre-trial hearing before Judge Andre le Grange.

At an earlier hearing a fourth person, Zola Tonga, was jailed for 18 years for his part in the murder.

Ms Riley asked the court to schedule a second pre-trial conference for April 13 as judgment was being awaited on Dewani's appeal in the UK against an order granted for his extradition to South Africa.

She said there was no indication when the appeal judgment would be handed down.
