Star-studded Scout honours list

01:05, Jul 31 2010

Sir David Attenborough, Richard Hammond and the Archbishop of York have been awarded badges for their inspirational work in the Scout Association's annual birthday honours list.

Comic actors James Corden, Eddie Izzard and David Walliams were also among 15 heroes and heroines who received Scout badges as the organisation celebrated its 103rd birthday.

Scouting for Girls lived up to their name by being awarded the musician badge while Spelbound proved once again that Britain's Got Talent, picking up the performing arts badge.

Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu received the Scout badge for faith.

He said: "I think that faith should be a very important part of your life, whether you are an Archbishop or a Scout.

"Remember what the Cub Scout Promise says: 'I promise that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and to the Queen and to help other people.' Surely that is a promise we should all want to make?"

Sir David was given the naturalist badge, while Top Gear and Blast Lab presenter Hammond said he was "delighted" to receive the scientist badge.

Acrobatic troupe Spelbound, who won this year's Britain's Got Talent, said they were "honoured" to be awarded the performing arts badge.

To celebrate Scouting's birthday, its half a million members from across the UK were given the chance to vote online for public figures who have encouraged others to try new activities and learn new skills.

Meanwhile, Countryfile presenter Julia Bradbury described it as a "great honour" to be awarded the communicator badge.
