Alcoholic teen abuses officer and upsets his own family

Aug 3 2007

by Justine Bailey, Vale Advertiser

THE mother of a teenager with a drink problem told a court on Friday how she had taken his photograph to pubs and off-licences to try to stop them selling him booze.

When asked by the chairman of the magistrates where he bought the drink the 16-year-old told Prestatyn youth court: “Somebody gets it for me.”

The youth from Denbigh pleaded guilty to using threatening and abusive language on July 20 when he was arrested for banging loudly on a friend’s door.

Prosecutor Nita Dowell said when the female police officer arrested him and took him to St Asaph police station, obviously under the influence of alcohol, he directed a string of filthy sexual remarks at her.

Ms Dowell said the youth had one previous conviction for a similar offence, which was also committed under the influence of alcohol.

His mother told the magistrates: “I have been round pubs and off-licences to get him barred but he won’t tell us where he’s getting it from.

“He knows how worried we are.”

Chairman Isfryn Williams told the teenager that he didn’t seem to realise the problem his behaviour was causing for his parents.

“It’s easy to say you are sorry but you appear to think it doesn’t matter,” he added.

The youth was made subject of a six-month action plan during which he must attend an alcohol awareness course.

Magistrates also ordered him to write an apology to the police officer.
