Blind man’s woof is a top class student

Aug 3 2007

by Matt Sims, Vale Advertiser

A SPECIAL college student has been showered with gifts after demonstrating pedigree dedication to her task.

Honey, guide dog to Michael Sandeman, from Denbigh, has faithfully attended Coleg Llandrillo’s campus in the town and helped her owner over the last six years.

Michael has studied and completed the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) course on a group facilitated and drop in basis with help from learning support assistant Moira Illidge.

He is the first visually impaired student to complete the ECDL at the college, thus paving the way for others to study the course in the future.

Prior to this, he studied Introduction to Word Processing and Introduction to the Internet courses at the college.

During this time Michael has also achieved an all Wales Adult Learners Award and a Coleg Llandrillo Achiever of the year award.

He has also prepared Braille signage for the 37 access doors in the college using his Braille Dymo tape machine and raised awareness and motivated the college to ensure that even more up-to-date facilities are available to facilitate the learning process for students.

Throughout all this Honey has been at his side or under his desk!

College head Julia Hughes said: “We are delighted to present Honey with her certificate and gifts of a dog bowl and dog treats for her dedication over the last six years at college and would also like to congratulate Michael on his success and perseverance and his achievements despite very difficult health problems.”

Michael is now hoping to progress to the Using IT for Family History course at the college with spaces have already been reserved for him and, of course, for Honey and Moira!
