Driver admits death charge

Aug 3 2007

by Matt Sims, Vale Advertiser

A 45-YEAR-OLD Italian van driver admitted on Friday a charge of causing the death of a motorcyclist by dangerous driving.

It follows a tragic fatal accident on May 20 this year on the A5 at Glasfryn near Corwen.

Defendant Andrea Ciontoli, of Marconi in Italy followed the proceedings at Mold Crown Court with the aid of an interpreter.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of causing the death of 49-year-old Michael Rumsey, of Cypress Close, Melling, Merseyside, by driving a Renault Master van on the A5 dangerously.

Ciontoli was further remanded in custody by Judge John Rogers QC.

The judge agreed to a request from defending barrister John Philpotts for a pre-sentence report, but said that the sentence was inevitable.

Mr Philpotts said his client was a man of good character and that a pre-sentence report would be of assistance to the sentencing court.

Fuel campaign

NEARLY 300 vehicle owners were stopped as part of a five-day clampdown by Customs officers on the use of illegal fuel.

The operation took place in Ruthin and Denbigh, as well as parts of Rhyl, Mold and Wrexham, between July 18 and 22, with 12 vehicles detected running on illicit substances.

Five of the detected vehicles were tractors operating outside the accepted usage of red diesel.

Speaking after the exercise Chris Bagley, senior officer, HMRC said: “Illegal fuel use is not a harmless fiddle, it is a deliberate attempt to operate at an advantage over honest drivers who pay the appropriate duty for their fuel.”
