PLANNING chiefs could force a Denbigh pub to take down awnings put up to provide shelter for smokers following the introduction of a ban on lighting up in enclosed spaces. Council bosses have recommended an application for the two retractable coverings at the Hand Inn be refused in a report to go before Denbighshire’s planning committee on Wednesday. The red five metre wide awnings, which have already been installed at the pub, do not preserve or enhance the town’s conservation area, which the pub lies in, says the document. It reads: “The proposal is considered unacceptable and accordingly is recommended for refusal. “The use of inappropriate awnings on buildings in conservation areas should not be condoned, as a clear precedent would be set rendering it difficult to control other unacceptable awnings in such locations.” Bear-force one IF YOU go down to Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd next week you’re sure of a big surprise. Not because teddy bears are due to have their picnic – but rather the fact that Paddington and Pooh are set to be launched from the dizzy heights of a church tower. St Mary’s Church will once again be hosting their hugely popular teddy bear parachute jump as part of their summer fair next Saturday. Other highlights will include games for youngsters, a raffle, a produce store and refreshments. Thrilling win A DENBIGH resident is in double-0 heaven after scooping prizes in a competition run by the town’s library. To promote the facility’s extended range of DVDs to hire, organisers offered prizes to coincide with the small screen release of Casino Royale. Ceri Rowse, from Henllan Street, won an MP3 player and copy of the 21st Bond film, with Joshua Sedgwick, from Cyffylliog, Nia Tynan, from Denbigh, and Stephen Williams, also from Denbigh, winning DVDs. Walk this way DENBIGHSHIRE residents are being invited to become more active and improve their health by joining a regular series of walks around the county.
