Plea on street drains

Apr 27 2007

by Matt Sims, Vale Advertiser

A STREET is being turned into a river every time it rains because drains are not being cleared according to local residents.

Householders on Love Lane, in Denbigh, say the problem has grown worse in recent months as debris such as gravel and soil is washed down from the top of the street to bottom.

Now locals say they simply want a response from Denbighshire after repeated requests to find out about the situation have gone unanswered.

In a response to the Vale Advertiser, a spokesman for the local authority claimed they had sent their clean-up crews to the area – but had been unable to carry out work because parked cars blocked access.

Love Lane Neighbourhood Watch chairman Tony Crimes said: “We intend to e-mail them weekly because we are not getting things done on the road.

“The problem has been going on for some years but has been exacerbated for over a year now.

“It just seems there is no real attempt to clear the drains and if it rains it becomes a real problem. We have e-mailed the council three times and had no reply.

“Unfortunately, heavy rain is forecast in the next month or so which means the whole street will be turned into a river.”

The issue was first flagged up by county councillor Gwyneth Kensler in May last year, and, several weeks later, Denbighshire trucks were spotted at the site – though residents were never informed what they were doing there.

In any case, householders say cleaning work which may have taken place did not work because the problem still exists – and is now causing misery for other parts of the town.

“We’ve not had any feedback from Denbighshire – we just want them to communicate,” said Mr Crimes.

“It flows down to Lenten Pool now too, so it’s not just affecting Love Lane.”

A spokesman for Denbighshire County Council, said: “When crews have visited Love Lane, in Denbigh, to try and solve this problem, they have been stopped because access to the gullies causing the situation has been blocked by parked vehicles.

“We will attempt to rectify the problem again as soon as possible.”
