Discussions on future of POs

May 30 2007

by Justine Bailey, Rhyl Visitor

MEASURES to support post offices were on the table at the third top level meeting called by Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane in Parliament last week.

Mr Ruane had called the meeting to bring together representatives from the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters (NFSP), MPs, treasury minister Ed Balls, post office minister Jim Fitzpatrick, parliamentary under secretary at the Wales office Nick Ainger, banks and credit unions.

During the meeting they discussed ideas for the future of the Post Office network and encouraged co-operation between financial institutions.

The two other meetings called by Mr Ruane allowed the NFSP, which included local representatives, to lobby MPs and ministers.

“It is hugely important we have input from as many people as possible on this issue and I was pleased to see representatives from numerous financial organisations at this meeting,” said Mr Ruane. “Although there is an element of competition between post offices and banks there are also many ways in which their services can complement each other.

“We are also examining ways of developing credit unions through the Post Office network.

“There are two excellent credit unions operating in the Vale of Clwyd and their services could be ideal for many people who at present might not be able to access their facilities.

“I know many banks are also looking at the ways in which they can possibly offer more of their services through the network.”
