Divine intervention

May 23 2007

By Dave Jones

THE Roman Catholic Bishop of Wrexham is being asked to call a halt to controversial plans for a large-scale housing development in Prestatyn.

People living in the Fforddisa and St George’s Drive area have formed an action group to try to thwart proposals by Anwyl Construction for 61 properties on land off Tip Lane.

The land is currently owned by the Catholic church as it is understood it was once hoped to build a primary school on the site. In recent years it has been used as grazing for horses.

Denbighshire councillors will consider the planning application today (Wednesday), but objectors met at the weekend to draw up a plan of action.

It is understood over 170 have written to the authority and over 30 have also written to the Bishop of Wrexham, the Rt Rev Edwin Regan, asking for the church not to sell the land to the developers.

The objectors say the development will lead to a massive increase in traffic at what is already a busy junction, especially when children are going to and from school. Both Prestatyn High School and Ysgol y Llys Welsh-medium primary school are nearby.

"Even now wagons going to and from the civic amenity site often have difficulty getting in and out of Tip Lane and with 61 new properties that could mean over 120 additional cars," said Paul Roberts.

The road also leads to a cycle track which links to the town centre.

One of the main objections, however, is to the type of properties proposed. The developers claim two and three- storey houses would be compatible with the area, but the residents argue that apart from two of three buildings all other premises in the area are bungalows.

There are also concerns about possible pollution of the wet land as it abuts a former waste tip.

North Wales Conservative AM Mark Isherwood has been asked to investigate the claims and support the objections.
