Town gets back on the right track

May 30 2007

by Justine Bailey, Rhyl Visitor

A TRIP down memory lane for the older generations and an exciting new adventure for the younger ones was enjoyed at a huge weekend event, which not only launched Rhyl Week but “kick-started the regeneration of the town”.

The grand opening of Central Station took place at Marine Lake on Saturday when people of all ages flocked to join in the celebration and board one of the five miniature locomotives operating from the impressive new platform.

Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones who was at the event, along with MP Chris Ruane, claims the station is the start of many great projects which will help ensure Rhyl returns to being the premier resort of North Wales.

“This is the start of the regeneration of Rhyl,” she said. “It will complement the programme of work planned for the town and give hope to the people of Rhyl.”

Cllr Joan Butterfield, who is a trustee of Rhyl Steam Preservation Trust, was delighted that so many people supported the opening, which she said shows the local community’s interest in the history of their town.

“I think the day has gone really well,” she said.“The amount of history here today is quite remarkable.”

Mayor Cllr David Thomas agreed the event was the huge success they had hoped it would be.

“I think it has been a fantastic start to Rhyl Week,” he said. “It highlights the enthusiasm of community and working together.

“The crowd support today has been absolutely tremendous. It has been a wonderful occasion and you have got to give thanks to the Rhyl Steam Preservation Trust for organising such a memorable event.”
