Llanelli 6, Rhyl 0

Sep 18 2006

By Mike Mcevoy, Daily Post

RHYL manager John Hulse read the riot act to his players after the team suffered their heaviest defeat under his four-year manager-ship.

The previously unbeaten leaders lost their 100% record in dramatic style on a miserable afternoon at Stebonheath Park.

"We never like to get beaten, but to lose in that manner is unacceptable," said afurious Hulse. "People will not be allowed to get away with it and changes will be made."

Yet the first half hour at Stebonheath Park hinted little at the destruction to come as the Lilywhites shaped the better side, producing good passing football and creating some decent chances.

Then against the run of play, Rhys Griffiths edged the hosts in front on 31 minutes.

The visitors responded well and were incensed when ablatant penalty appeal for a foul on Stuart Graves in the area was turned down. Had the decision gone Rhyl's way the pattern of the match could well have changed.

Things got worse for the Lilies when they had defender James Brewerton dismissed for a second yellow card offence - leaving Hulse's hopefuls with much more of an uphill task than they already faced.

Adding insult to injury, Llanelli's classy Spanish striker Jacob Mingorance made it 2-0 seven minutes before the turnaround.

The second period went from bad to worse for Rhyl as the hosts, who finished second in the Welsh Premier last season and have already experienced success in the Uefa Cup this term, added four more goals.

Doing the damage once again were Griffiths, a close season signing from Port Talbot where he finished up the WPL's Golden Boot winner in 2005/06 with 29 goals, and the ever dangerous Mingorance.

Griffiths added strikes on 60 and 73 minutes to complete his hat-trick and the Spaniard did likewise on 74 and 78 to round off a dreadful day for the Lilywhites.

RHYL: Whitfield, Connolly, Graves (Powell 46), Clampitt, Horan, Edwards, Hay (Orlik 70), Moran, Cameron (Wilson 46), Murtagh, Brewerton.
