New boy Williams on target to save Airbus

Oct 9 2006

by Daily Post

DEBUTANT Darren Williams struck a second-half equaliser as Airbus battled back to earn a share of the spoils at the Gwent Stadium.

Still looking for their first Welsh Premier win of the campaign, the Wingmakers could take heart from the manner in which they salvaged a point after Cwmbran had led with two goals from Jodie Jenkins.

And it was striker Williams who pounced to earn the equaliser 15 minutes from time when the new recruit from rivals Newi Cefn Druids planted his header into the net from substitute Dave Hughes' cross.

The point was well earned, with Airbus on the back foot for the first period with their hosts playing with the wind at their backs.

They appeared to be heading into the interval all square, but Jenkins put the home side ahead on the stroke of half time as he drove the ball into the net through a packed goalmouth following a corner.

Airbus thought they had levelled when a corner from player-boss Gareth Owen floated straight into the net, but it was ruled out for a foul on keeper Gareth Wesson.

And to rub salt into their wounds, Cwmbran soon doubled their lead following a 57th minute breakaway that ended with Jenkins firing past keeper Adam McGhee.

But the visitors displayed plenty of resilience, first reducing the arrears on 70 minutes when James Hussaney latched onto a long clearance before crashing a superb 20-yard volley into the net.

It was all square when Williams marked his debut with a goal five minutes later, while both sides had their chances to claim the spoils late on.
