Struggling Airbus nab former Red Devil

Feb 9 2007

The Flintshire Chronicle, Llandudno

AIRBUS UK have completed the sensational signing of former Manchester United and Wales midfielder Simon Davies.

The 32-year-old goes straight into the squad for tonight's Flint-shire derby at Connah's Quay Nomads (7.30pm).

Davies has been registered with Chester City, playing for their reserves and coaching their youth team, who are based at the Wingmakers' Airfield home.

It represents a major coup for player-manager Gareth Owen and his assistant Alan Bicker-staff, who reckons the arrival of Davies will have short and long-term benefits.

The Airbus number two said: 'It's a big boost to have got him. He's the type of player we hope will attract other players to our club in the future.

'Having played for Manchester United he's not the type of player you leave on the bench, so we're hoping he can play a big role for us for the rest of the season.

'We tried to get him in the summer but he felt he couldn't do himself justice as his fitness wasn't at the level he wanted. But he's been playing for Chester's reserves and he feels good, so he can't wait to get going.'

Davies made 20 appearances for United and scored in the Champions League against Galatasaray. It was also at Old Trafford where he won his one and only Welsh cap.

After leaving the Premiership giants, Davies had spells with Luton, Macclesfield and Roch-dale before spending three years in the Welsh Premier League.

He was the top flight's player of the year in 2002/03 with Bangor and later appeared for The New Saints and Rhyl.

He comes into a Wingmakers squad still reeling from last Friday's cruel basement-battle defeat to Caernarfon.

With the score at 2-2 with five minutes to play, Owen's men were denied a seemingly stone-wall penalty and then had two goals chalked off for offside.

And to rub salt into the wounds, the rock-bottom visitors scored with virtually the last kick of the game to sneak a 3-2 victory that took them within a point of Airbus, with three games in hand.

Bickerstaff said: 'We deserved to win the game but we didn't have the luck with the decisions and we also missed some big chances.'

Despite the nature of the loss, the assistant boss says morale isn't a problem ahead of tonight's visit to their high-flying neighbours.

Bickerstaff said: 'We're still confident we can get out of it but we are running out of games, so we must treat each one like a cup final.

'Nomads are a great team with top players so we know it's going to be difficult. We've set ourselves the target of getting at least a point.'

Chief Owen was closing in on another capture as the Chronicle went to press. ..SUPL:
