Wingmakers will test us, says Morgan

Feb 9 2007

The Flintshire Chronicle, Llandudno

CONNAH'S Quay Nomads should be wary of an Airbus UK backlash tonight.

That is the verdict of Nomads number two Alan Morgan on the eve of the Flintshire derby at Cae Y Castell (7.30pm).

Despite being red-hot favourites for the clash, Nev Powell's right-hand man is adamant the Deesiders cannot afford to take their relegation-threatened visitors lightly.

He reckons they will be hurting after their basement-battle defeat to Caernarfon last Friday. And that, combined with their desire to bag the local bragging rights, he says, will make them a dangerous proposition.

Morgan said: 'I'm sure Airbus will be a bit down after what happened to them on Friday and I'm sure they will want to respond against us.

'So we're expecting a difficult game and we'll have to make sure we are on our game.

'To be fair to the lads, they've done that all season. They have never taken anybody lightly.'

The fourth-placed Quay, who sneaked a 3-2 win at the Wing-makers back in September, know three points tonight would keep their bid to bring European football to Deeside firmly on track.

Another possible route into Europe is in the Welsh Cup.

Powell's men booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over Cymru Alliance visitors Llandudno on Saturday.

The hard-fought success earned them a last-eight showdown at favourites Llanelli.

Morgan said: 'It was a good win over Llandudno because they came and did really well and you could see why they are up there in their league. We went 1-0 down in the first minute and I was thinking it's going to be one of those days, but fair play to the lads, they came back well.

'Llanelli is a tough draw but if we want to win the Welsh Cup - and I do think we can win it - we have to beat the best. We will go there confident.'

Manager Powell brought Paul Carvill on for his debut against Llandudno, and the winger was this week joined at the club by another new boy, striker Chris Melia, who has signed from North West Counties Division Two leaders Winsford United.

* THE full draw for the Welsh Cup quarter-finals is: Carmarthen v Porthmadog, Holyhead v Welshpool, Llanelli v Nomads, Port Talbot v Afan Lido. Ties will be played on Saturday, March 3. ..SUPL:
