FA Cup winner joins ex-United ranks at Bangor

Sep 30 2005

By Christopher Beesley, Daily Post

BANGOR City have added a Manchester United legend to their ranks by snapping up the Red Devils' 1990 FA Cup final winning goalscorer Lee Martin.

The 37-year-old left-back netted the only goal of the game in the Wembley replay against Crystal Palace 15 years ago - a crucial strike which delivered Sir Alex Ferguson his first trophy with the club.

Martin, who also went on to play for Celtic, retired from the game with a back injury and has not played a competitive match for seven years since he turned out for Huddersfield Town.

His move will bring the tally of ex-United players at Bangor to three with boss Peter Davenport, a former striker, and Bangor's player coach Clayton Blackmore who played in midfield.

And Davenport is hopeful that a recovered Martin can prove to be a key player in the Welsh Premier.

He said: "Lee had to pack in because of a back injury but he's got over all that now and is feeling good.

"I played alongside him in a summer veterans tournament for Manchester United against Liverpool and he looked good.

"He's a former team-mate of Clayton Blackmore and he got in touch with us about playing again.

"He looks pretty fit and has looked after himself since he stopped playing so hopefully he could prove to be quite an asset."

Glossop-based Martin will not be available for every Bangor match.

Davenport said: "United still pay Lee's wages so we'll be dependent on his commitments to them .

"However, if he stays fit then his quality and experience can shine through.

"There are not many people in any league who can say that they've scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final and that's a great bit of history that Lee will have forever."

Martin could be in line to make his Bangor debut tomorrow at home to Caernarfon League side Llanberis in the second round of the Welsh Cup.

Despite Bangor's opponents' lowly status, Davenport is well aware that the game will be a full-blooded tussle.

He said: "It's a local derby and all their lads will be up for it."

The game presents Bangor with a break from their Welsh Premier campaign, which has only just begun to take shape.

Davenport is hoping that a 6-0 mauling of Caersws - his side's second league win on the bounce - can be a springboard to climbing up the table.

Davenport said: "We ground out a result at Porthmadog but I thought that our football was excellent at Caersws and our midfield ran them ragged.

"We've brought in quite a few new players over the summer and it's taken them a little while to gel but I don't think anyone would have any complaints if we'd have struck double figures in our last league game."

Meanwhile, Davenport has revealed that he believes that Bangor are well-prepared for the new Welsh Premier Under-21 competition.

Only one of the scheduled opening fixtures were played last week because several clubs couldn't raise a team, but Davenport said: "We were left kicking our heels.

"Out of our first-team squad we have eight players who would qualify for this league while our U21 coach Steve Evans has a further 16 players, so we'd have no problems about fielding a side."

Davenport is also looking forward to a close league battle this season.

He said: "I'm surprised that Llanelli haven't done better after what they did to us on the opening day but they seem to be playing well without finishing teams off.

"Apart from TNS, everyone is knocking each other about, so it could be interesting."
