Craig restores Dragons' pride

Oct 12 2006

by Mark Currie, Daily Post

SKIPPER Craig Bellamy ended a long goal drought for his country at the Millennium Stadium last night, which was nothing less than he deserved after inspiring Wales to a morale-boosting first victory in their 2008 European Championship campaign.

His 10th international goal, which came 19 months after his last and fullyfour years since his last competitive strike in a memorable 2-1 defeat of Italy, ensured three valuable points in the Group D qualifying programme and revenge over visitors Cyprus who had won the last friendly meeting between the countries 1-0 last November.

And Bellamy’s strike partner Robert Earnshaw, who was hauled off halfway through last Saturday’s 5-1 defeat by Slovakia, justified manager John Toshack’s faith by doubling the lead that had been provided by Wrexham-born Jason Koumas.

More importantly Wales proved their ability to bounce back from the humiliation of the weekend’s 5-1 defeat, the worst home scoreline since 1908, and delighted their loyal, but ever-dwindling band of supporters who again were vastly outnumbered by the huge swathes of empty seats.

The Wales boss had probably thought long and hard about making wholesale

changes, but, in the end decided upon just two.

Ipswich Town goalkeeper Lewis Price, who made his senior debut against the Cypriots in Limassol 11 months ago and played 45 minutes in the following friendly against Paraguay in February, replaced 39-year old Paul Jones, who admitted his mistakes proved costly last Saturday.
