Craig will play

Sep 26 2006

By Mark Currie Chief Sports Writer, Daily Post

LIVERPOOL striker Craig Bellamy has told Wales manager John Toshack he wants to play in next month's two European Championship matches against Slovakia and Cyprus, despite aclash with his impending court appearance on an assault charge.

The three-day trial at Cardiff magistrates' court has been set down for Monday October 9, 48 hours after the Slovakia match and two days before the Cyprus game, both of which are being staged at the Millennium Stadium.

Bellamy has been charged with assaulting a19-year-old girl in aCardiff nightclub and Toshack yesterday admitted the trial was an added complication to cope with alongside a long injurylist, headed by captain Ryan Giggs.

"It's more of a problem for Craig than for me," said the Wales boss.

"At the moment Craig feels he can play in both matches," he went on.

"He has known about this for some considerable time and in his last few games it hasn't seemed to affect him.

"For the week leading up to the Slovakia game we don't have a problem, but then he's got this other thing, which could play on his mind a bit.

"Obviously, though, I would hope and expect him to be involved in both games." Toshack, who admitted that he may be forced to reschedule some of the second week squad training sessions around Bellamy's court appearance, refused to be drawn into further speculation and added:

"We don't really want to talk too much about it because it diverts the attention away from what are two very important games for us.

"Maybe we will be able to get a 90-minute adjournment for training, you never know!

"I do not think we will have any problems with him not being mentally prepared, that's not like Craig, he always wants to play.

"He is in the squad and has two big Liverpool matches before we get together - against Galatasaray and Bolton - and I firmly believe he will be playing for us in the two games.

Bellamy has yet to score in the Premier-ship for the Reds, and missed a sitter on as they beat Spurs 3-0 on Saturday. But this, added to the fact that he has not netted for Wales for 18 months, is of no concern to Toshack.

He said: "I don't think there's much wrong even if he is struggling for a goal at the moment. But that applies to us as well as Liverpool.

"He has missed some important chances for us as well over recent games, he knows that. It is an area we must improve on.
