Cypriots warning of Welsh backlash

Oct 11 2006

by Andrew Gilpin, Daily Post

CYPRUS have been warned to anticipate a backlash from a wounded Wales outfit when the two sides meet in tonight’s European Championship qualifier at the Millennium Stadium (8pm).

The cautionary advice comes from within their own camp, with Cyprus coach Angelos Anastasiades wary of the reaction from John Toshack’s side to their 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Slovakia last Saturday.

The Cypriot squad flew into Cardiff on Monday evening looking to build on the momentum of a 5-2 home win over the Republic of Ireland at the weekend, and trained at the stadium last night.

Anastasiades said there would be no complacency among his players. "Wales are in the same position as we were after losing 6-1 to Slovakia in our previous match and when a team suffers a defeat like that, you can expect them to be more dangerous the next time,” he said.

Despite a lower seeding than Wales in Group D, Cyprus recorded a 1-0 win against Toshack’s men in a friendly in Limassol last November, a result that might have been more one-sided had it not been for Ipswich Town goalkeeper Lewis Price, who made a series of fine saves.

Toshack afterwards described the Welsh performance as embarrassing, but Anastasiades, who has been in charge of the national team for two years, said the game was irrelevant.

"It’s difficult to compare that game with this one,” he added. "Then it was a friendly and the line-ups of both sides were very different. Since then I have had the opportunity to watch both Wales games against the Czech Republic and Slovakia and it would be wrong to assume Wales are not a good side.”

But the coach also insisted his players were keen to demonstrate that their “underdog” tag was misplaced.

"I have never believed that we went into this group as underdogs because we have some good players in the squad with a wide variety of experience, including a few who have played in the Champions League.

"We were criticised heavily after the Slovakia defeat but we restored some pride last Saturday and showed what we are capable of.”

Anastasiades is set to name an unchanged line-up tonight.
