Frontman Hartson set for Wales recall

Sep 21 2006

By Mark Currie, Daily Post

WEST Bromwich Albion pair John Hartson and Jason Koumas are set to be named in the Wales squad for European Championship matches against Slovakia and Cyprus next month.

Team manager John Toshack unveils his squad on Monday in the knowledge that captain Ryan Giggs, who has a hamstring injury, could miss both of the Millennium Stadium clashes, which are vital to Welsh hopes of making up for the 2-1 defeat by the Czech Republic in Teplice three weeks ago.

Hartson, 31, who recently reversed his decision to quit international football, would provide an extra option for Toshack's side, who have managed just four goals in their last six outings.

He last played for Wales in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Cyprus in November last year and then announced his shock retirement two months later, but his subsequent move from Celtic to West Brom prompted a change of heart, which has been welcomed by Toshack.

The Swansea-born veteran made a dream start to his West Brom career with two goals on his debut, but the goals have since dried up and an ankle injury kept him out of contention for Tuesday's Carling Cup tie against Cheltenham, which saw a first start of the season for Hawthorns team-mate Koumas.

The Wrexham-born midfielder was left out of the squad for the Group D opener against the Czech Republic because he had missed pre-season training while holding out for a move from West Brom to Cardiff, but he has since agreed a new deal with the Championship outfit, who this week parted company with manager Bryan Robson.

And there could be a surprise addition to the squad in the shape of Barnsley front-man Daniel Nardiello, who had previously been reluctant to commit himself to Wales, despite the fact that his father won two caps for his country in 1978.

Nardiello has not played at all this season after breaking his collarbone in pre-season, but the 23-year-old returned to full training last week and should be up to full fitness in time for Wales' must-win matches against Slovakia on Saturday, October 7 and Cyprus on the following Wednesday.
