I'll keep going

Oct 5 2006

by Mark Currie, Daily Post

GOALKEEPER Paul Jones, in line to win his 50th cap for Wales on Saturday, is a firm believer in the old adage: "If you are good enough, you are old enough."

And he has no qualms about going into a European Championship double-header this weekend with the likelihood he will be playing behind two teenage defenders, Lewin Nyatang and Gareth Bale.

Now 39, the Queens Park Rangers veteran is 10 years older than anyone else in manager John Toshack’s injury-hit squad and is of an age to be a father to the Derby County and Southampton youngsters.

But as he contemplates a personal career milestone against Slovakia at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, Jones is backing the young guns to seize their opportunity with both hands.

“I’m probably in the squad just to keep the average age up a bit,” he joked.

“With Ryan Giggs missing through injury and Robert Page announcing his retirement from international football I can give everyone else in the squad a few years, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“You cannot allow yourself to be too concerned about injuries because that’s part of football at both club and international level and what is a disappointment for the missing players is an opportunity for somebody else.
