Let's bounce back in style

Oct 10 2006

by Mark Currie, Daily Post

EVERTON’S Simon Davies says Wales must take a leaf from Cyprus' book for any chance of making an impact on the European Championship qualifying programme.

Tomorrow’s Millennium Stadium opponents bounced back from a 6-1 hammering by Slovakia to beat the Republic of Ireland 5-2 at the weekend and the 26-year-old midfielder believes John Toshack’s young guns can emulate the Mediterranean island following their 5-1 mauling by Slovakia at the Millennium Stadium.

“I didn’t know about the Cyprus result until Sunday,” said Davies yesterday.

“They obviously responded very well, especially after losing so heavily to Slovakia in their previous match, so we have got to turn it round in a similar fashion on Wednesday.

“And we owe Cyprus one because they beat us 1-0 over there last year in what was one of our most disappointing performances before Saturday’s defeat.”

Davies said Wales shot themselves in the foot last weekend, with individual errors being clinically punished by their opponents.

“It was a strange game in many ways because I felt we played pretty well in the opening 30 minutes,” he added.
